Mark 13:3-13 NKJV
“Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign when all these things will be fulfilled?” And Jesus, answering them, began to say: “Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He, ’ and will deceive many. But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be troubled; for such things must happen, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. “But watch out for yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils, and you will be beaten in the synagogues. You will be brought before rulers and kings for My sake, for a testimony to them. And the gospel must first be preached to all the nations. But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved.
God is not a God who holds back. In the past, He spoke through signs. These signs were given by God to signify something of great moments to come. E.g. The rainbow was given to Noah as a sign that God will never flood the earth and use it to wipe out humanity ever again. Another was the showing of stars to Abraham to signify his lineage and legacy. Also, the star that the 3 wise men followed to find baby Jesus in the stable in Bethlehem was a sign to them that the Messiah was just born.
This excerpt from Mark says that there will be false ideas, teachers and preachers during the end times. In this day and age, false teaching and lies are rampant and everywhere. Wars and rumours of wars is another reminder we face everyday. Violence, not just physical violence but verbal violence too. If you have read the Bible, you should be aware of it and know that the end is near, but that you should not worry or be alarmed because Jesus is returning soon. Earthquakes, famines, pestilences are all widespread in the last days too. These all signify the end times.
Christians in the past and future would have had/will have to meet up in secret because of persecution. Yet through all these, the Gospel will find its way through and will grow and spread despite all these hinderances in place. God is working and invincibly, making sure his word is reaching all of humanity.
Something that the world does not understand is the power and and possession the Christian has derived from the Holy Spirit. This is why the Christian believes that Christianity isn’t some fancy religion teaching us how to do good works and lead better lives. No. Neither is it because the Bible is such an interesting book (it is though), or its knowledge or vast historic content. It is because the ministry of the Holy Spirit works through it, within our hearts and saves our souls from eternal damnation.
These verses also go on to say that if there is anything that ever happens to us, we should not worry about what we should say or prepare a speech, because at that time, the Holy Spirit will work through us and give us the wisdom on what to say.
The bible predicts that Christians will be hated by the world and not loved by many. We will be outcast and persecuted for our faith.
As of such, it is not possible to love the things of this world and still love Jesus. Although we still have our human temptations and old sinful habits, we should be very aware that these things will not last because of this verse for example..
““Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:19-21 NKJV
Loving the world and being a Christian; they are mutually exclusive. We are in the world, but not of it.
In conclusion, it would be helpful to follow these 3 A’s as a guideline.
- Be aware (of the current situation and what is going on)
- Be alert (as the bible says, we are sent out into the world, there will be wolves in sheep clothings, so we should be innocent like doves but wise as serpents)
- Be active (in serving the Lord, regardless of your calling)
Something i’ve always wondered and heard many people ask the same question, so I thought i’d be helpful to share..
Why does God allow bad things to happen on this world?
- To highlight and show the viciousness and depravity of sin. To remind us that sin is all indwelling within us. Remember the song Amazing grace? The song contains.. to save a wretch like me.
- To give time to people to turn back and find their way back to him. He could easily destroy the world again, but he is giving us all yet another chance to repent and confess our sins.
